This year for its annual drama production, Sacred Heart School of Halifax has brought the ins and outs of a Broadway show to its very own theatre. It’s filled with romance, action, suspense and lots of great laughs! Get ready for a thrilling musical murder mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat as Sacred Heart School of Halifax presents CURTAINS THE MUSICAL.
Take a trip back to 1950’s Boston where a cast of Broadway pros schleps through the opening night of their misshapen production of “Robbin’ Hood of the Old West”. They’re aiming for a good review from the Boston Globe and its senior critic Dana Grady (Sandler Gordon) when their leading lady, the faded film diva Jessica Cranshaw (Meg Currie), dies on stage. Lieutenant Frank Cioffi of the greater Boston Police Force, a closeted theatre enthusiast (played brilliantly by Alex Jackson), must swoop in to solve the mystery of her death, reconstruct a show on its last legs, get the girl and save the day before the curtain falls on the rest of the cast.
Brought to life by a talented troupe of teens, the show features a group of mysterious and quirky characters who each have their own dark secrets to hide! The musical features the brassy and business- savvy producer Carmen Bernstein (Rory Flynn) and her difficult husband Sidney (Isaac Burke), esteemed director Christopher Belling (Torsten Sinclair), choreographer extraordinaire Bobby Pepper (Nathan Otley), a one-woman bank named Lottie Shapiro (Razan Al-Sharkawi), a team of ex-spouses and writing partners, Aaron Fox (Nick Fernandez) and Georgia Hendrix (Meghan MacAskill), and stars like the ingenue Niki Harris (Abigail Sinclair) and the up-and-comer Bambi Bernet (Gracyn MacDonald) all ably corralled by ever efficient stage manager Jenny Harmon (Genevieve Cunningham).
Under the musical and stage direction of Gwen Dawson and with choreography by Gina Thornhill, the stellar cast (decked out in beautiful 50’s costumes created by dedicated volunteers) and backstage crew (headed by musical veteran stage manager Caroline Rajda) lead the audience through a classic Kander and Ebb musical “whodunit” that will keep you guessing all night.
Do not miss the show that is sure to be a Tough Act to Follow and will keep you singing all the way home. CURTAINS THE MUSICAL opens Thursday night Feb. 4th at 7:30 and runs Friday and Saturday with shows starting at 7:30, as well as a 2:00 p.m. matinee on Saturday.
Tickets are $12 ($10 students); or $15 to attend the opening night dessert gala. Tickets may be purchased at the door or by calling (902) 422-4459. (5820 Spring Garden Rd., Halifax)
