Book Publication News!

Book Publication News

Facet publishers recently accepted the manuscript “Managing metadata in integrated discovery systems” for publication this year.  A chapter in this book entitled Outsourcing metadata: Navigating the generation and receipt of metadata in integrated discovery systems was written by Sacred Heart’s Librarian, Laurie Tarulli.

About the book:
Integrated discovery systems allow different libraries to share their metadata records widely and bring together collections from different libraries across the world. In an increasingly collaborative and cloud-based environment, what are the implications of using shared metadata? How do we maintain shared records that reflect the needs, languages, and identities of culturally and ethnically varied communities? In a Google-dominated search environment, we need to provide access to library resources via a variety of non-library discovery tools. In other words, we must manage metadata both within, across, and outside, library discovery tools by converting our library metadata to linked open data that all systems can access.

Conference Session Accepted

Sacred Heart’s Librarian, Laurie Tarulli, will be speaking at the Atlantic Provinces Library Association conference this Spring together with her research partner, Dr. Louise Spiteri (Dalhousie).  Their conference session, “Exploring how user-generated content in Canadian public library catalogues can impact readers' advisory services” is based on several years’ research focussing on how readers’ use/generate tags to describe their reading experiences and what they value when describing and discovering books.

Congratulations, Laurie!
