Nocturne, 6pm — Midnight - October 18th
Nocturne is an all night art festival that happens in the
city once a year. The streets are filled with video projections, sculptures,
and audio art, while galleries and museums open their doors to the public. Tens
of thousands of people enter the downtown core, the north end of the city, and
downtown Dartmouth to see exciting art projects that are installed for one
night only. It is a particularly special evening for Haligonians, as our city
is brimming with spirit and culture!
This Nocturne, Sacred Heart School of Halifax will be
opening its doors to be a part of Nocturne. On October 18, the historic parlours
of the school will be open to the public from 6:00pm until midnight as our
school hosts an independent artist project for the event. (This is a project that has been selected by
the Nocturne Jury to promote and fund.). The multimedia installation Weeper by Halifax based artist D'Arcy Wilson (and SHES
art teacher) will take over the small parlour of the school. As
described in the Nocturne festival guide:
An iconic naturalist peers over
sticks and stones, a man hurls rocks at a cliff side, and a sad country love
ballad mingles with antique furniture. In the installation Weeper, these mixed media works allude to a break from nature
within a post-colonial Western culture, and speak to feelings of alienation
from the natural world. Collectively, the works lament the destructive
potential of being human and of living
on the periphery of nature.
On October 18th, Sacred Heart School will also
host a series of art projects by the Girls’ High School, Fountain Academy, and
Sacred Heart Elementary school students. Viewers can visit the Parlour Gallery
and the outdoor grounds facing Spring Garden Road to see outdoor sculptural
works, light drawings, and more!
