Sacred Heart has once again placed 1st at the McGill University High School Debating tournament. This is the first time in 29 years a school has won back-to-back championships (and the third time in 7 years a Sacred Heart team has won the event).
In winning the event, Rory Flynn and Mattea Roach beat 135 other teams from across Canada. This was the 56th McGill tournament, and the largest ever. Rory and Mattea placed 1st in 7 of the 8 rounds they debated, taking 1 second place.
Sacred Heart sent 4 teams to the event, Fountain Academy had three, and we entered a team with one Sacred Heart student and a student from C.P.
The Fountain team of Robert and Torsten missed breaking by a single point, and Anya and Emma and Catherine and Maria missed by two. One of our junior teams, comprised of Derek Ryan and Ailie Sullivan, missed the junior break by a single point.
Our new debaters, Derek Ryan, Ailie Sullivan Madeline Peet and Olivia Ryan had an outstanding first tournament, debating entirely against high school students.
I am very proud of our team.
