On Tuesday, October 14th, over 180 students and their teachers from Sacred Heart Girls High School took action in an attempt to understand the plight of women in Kenya. They embarked upon the school’s first ever “Water Walk”.
The
initiative, organized by the student led “Free the Children” club at Sacred
Heart, was intended to raise awareness about the challenges women face in
accessing clean water for their families. “When we visited Kenya in June of
2013 we saw how the Mamas sacrificed their education and health to get water
for their families,” says Caroline Surrette, co-head of the school’s Free the
Children club. The average Kenyan woman walks 45 minutes to 3 hours, 7-8 times
per day to provide safe drinking water for her family.
In addition to raising awareness within the school
community, the Water Walk will help to raise funds for Sacred Heart’s Adopt a
Village campaign to build a school in Kenya.
