Brian Casey, our Sacred Heart School debating coach, announced that he is "pleased to report that Sacred Heart students once again triumphed at the McGill High School tournament, held this weekend in Montreal. The tournament, with 200 debaters from across Canada, is often the largest high school tournament of the year. It is also the longest running; this year was the 57th.
On Saturday, Rory Flynn became the first student in the tournament's history to place first for a third time. She and her partner successfully defended the team trophy as well, which Rory and her different partners have won three years in a row. Our teams also won the team trophy in 2008; in total, our debaters have placed first individually at this event 7 times in 12 tries. Rory's team had a perfect score, taking first place in each of the 9 rounds.
Our success in the junior category was similarly impressive. Derek Ryan and Madeleine Peet made it to the junior final, placing 8th and 12th in the junior category. Sacred Heart teams have made it to the junior final each of the years there has been a junior final--and we have won it as often as every other school put together.
Ours was the only school to have teams in the junior and senior final. In addition, our debaters had a lovely weekend in Montreal. Kudos to Catherine Burke and Emma McLean who missed breaking to quarter finals by one point; Robert Sapp and David Sapp, Ailie Sullivan and Minahil Nadeem all distinguished themselves well.
Two of the Ontario school teams were coached by Sacred Heart alumnae; the tournament was tabbed by Alyson Duff (who has many Sacred Heart connections)."
Another great showing.
