History Remembered

On Thursday, April 7th, Neptune's Misery Loves Theatre Company came to perform "HomeFront" to grades 7 to12 in the Study Hall.  The play used firsthand accounts of life in the trenches and at home to introduce us to a Nova Scotia family in transition during World War 1.  When a group of modern day siblings and cousins find an old trunk in their grandparent's attic, they're transported back 100 years through journals, letters and other artifacts from the Great War.  This show touched on the social, political and psychological aspects of conflict, and it was greatly appreciated by teachers and students alike.  Thank you to Mrs. McKay for bringing this troupe in to Sacred Heart.  It was excellent.

On Monday, April 11, Mrs. McKay's Grade 10 Canadian History classes attended workshops with the Lest We Forget Project, conducted by staff from the Halifax Public Library. Students were invited to explore copies of original military records of Nova Scotian soldiers and nursing sisters. Each student was assigned a package of documents that helped them to trace an individual's WW 1 experiences, including attestation papers, casualty forms, medical histories and pay records. The students learned a great deal about working with primary sources, and Nova Scotia's proud WW1 history!
