Fountain Academy Students doing Great Things at Shad Valley

Alex Gillis (attended Shad Valley at University of Waterloo)
Won at his program's competition.
Forward Commute is designed to increase transit ridership in the Downtown Halifax Region by making transit a more enjoyable, hassle-free experience. Through the use of a tap and go card we can charge by distance, allow retail stores to discount your transit costs (similar to parking validation) and provide the transit corporation with statistics and usage data allowing them to provide better routes and service to riders. Using Forward would eliminate kilotons of carbon emissions from those who would otherwise drive cars during their daily commute helping riders live large on a small footprint.

Note: Although not originally in the group, Colson Donohue has since joined Forward Commute as a Designer.

Aristides Milios (attended Shad Valley at McMaster University)
Won at his program's competition.
The ReFresh Company provides refillable body care product jars that reduce plastic bottle waste. You simply visit a ReFresh store and refill your glass jar in a similar style as you would fill up your cup at a frozen yogurt bar. Refill, not landfill.

Andy Samman (attended Shad Valley at Queens University)
Won a "Wildcard Spot" from Shad Valley international after placing 2nd at his program.
SolArt by Helios introduces photovoltaic glass artwork into the individual and commercial window industry. Photovoltaic windows are layered with a solar panel in the middle to collect solar power reducing carbon emissions. Each unit is aesthetically designed with the aim of providing functionality as well as appeal.

Nick Fernandez (attended Shad Valley at University of British Columbia)
Won at his program's competition.
Urbin is a product that redefines waste disposal by sorting the waste for the consumer, which reduces landfill space and other backend costs.
