Fountain Sharks Win Robotics Award

Mr. JobbLiam Kleronomos (Team Captain), Ms. Leadbetter
Robert Walsh, Liam Kleronomos, Matthew Kleronomos, Zack Sangster, Sam Carver, Jaden Lawen, Cullen Roach, Rocco LeBlanc, Jonathan Trott and Christophe Sylvester represented Fountain Academy at the HRM Regional FIRST Lego League (FLL) Qualifier this weekend.

FLL is an international robotics competition that requires students to complete pre-determined challenges with a robot in addition to researching a project to go along with a theme each year. During the one day competition the team is judged on their project, their abilities to work as a team, their robot design and their score on the robotics challenges.

At the competition, the Sharks rose above the rest and competed their third trial with the highest score of the whole day to win the Robotics Award, securing them a spot at the Provincial competition at Acadia in February! It is the first time that Fountain Academy will be sending a team to this stage of the competition. The winner of the provincial competition will represent Nova Scotia at the FLL World Championships.

Alex Gillis Receives Startup Canada's 2015 Award for Young Entrepreneur of the Year!

Sacred Heart Student Receives Startup Canada’s 2015 Award for
Young Entrepreneur of the Year

For Immediate Release: November 26, 2015 Halifax, NS - A Grade 12 Student from Sacred Heart School of Halifax has been named Canada's Young Entrepreneur of the Year. Alex Gillis, age 17, is the national winner of the Startup Canada Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, and will be honoured at an upcoming red carpet ceremony at the CN Tower in Toronto on Dec. 1.

"I think entrepreneurship should be a part of everyone's education," says Sacred Heart student, Alex Gillis. “Winning this award is a real honour.”

“I'm pleased and proud and not in the least surprised to see Alex achieve this well-deserved national award,” says Principal Robert Marchand.  “Like many of our Sacred Heart students, Alex has seen the lessons from his classroom can extend beyond the walls of the school." Gillis enrolled at Fountain Academy of the Sacred Heart School in Grade 7 when the boys’ high division of the school was just in its 5th year.  He credits their Business & Management course and Experiential Learning program for spurring his business interest and ability.

Gillis, co-founder of Bitness, started the tech company in 2014 after paying attention to a business need. Noticing the apparent over-staffing and marketing issues at a local coffee shop was the first realization of how Alex Gillis could personally solve a large real-world problem with technology. Gillis quickly realized that it would have to be a passive solution for the store requiring no customer interaction in the data collection process. Through his developed technology, using beacons to passively record shoppers with smartphones and installing beacons throughout the retail store to measure consumer flow through a store. Bitness highlights opportune times for promotions and staff scheduling adjustments as well as identifying high-traffic areas within the store. Bitness enables stores to increase revenue while decreasing expenditures and access real-time reports of traffic and flow both crucial to making sound business decisions.

Gillis, recipient of the Startup Canada award, finds himself in successful company. Other winners include: The Right Honourable Paul Martin, founder of the
Capital for Aboriginal Prosperity and Entrepreneurship Fund; Communitech CEO Iain Klugman; Medicine Hat-based wedding accessories company Weddingstar; Vancouver’s Victory Square Labs; sustainable superfood producers Entomo Farms; industrial analytic app maker RtTech Software; Accel-Rx President Natalie Dakers and; Tom Fath, owner of The Fath Group.

“Congratulations to the winners of the 2015 Startup Canada Awards, each of whom embody the spirit of entrepreneurship and who have exemplified excellence, integrity and exceptional impact through their efforts, enterprises and ethos,” said Victoria Lennox, co-founder and CEO of Startup Canada.

“Entrepreneurship is about human endeavour; it is about unleashing human potential to advance our society, economy and humanity. Canada was built by entrepreneurs and it is a privilege to have the opportunity to celebrate and showcase these magnificent Canadians who have collectively raised the tide for entrepreneurship and innovation.”

As the hallmark event celebrating and distinguishing Canadian entrepreneurship, the Startup Canada Awards can be likened to the Oscars for the entrepreneurship community. In its second year, hundreds of nominations were submitted from across Canada.

Sharks Win ACIS Hockey Tournament!

The Sharks won the ACIS Hockey Tournament this weekend defeating not only local teams but a team from Toronto as well.  Despite the fact that their opponents were significantly larger, given that the majority of our team is made up of Grade 7 players, they slew the Goliath’s one by one, not only winning the gold medal but remaining undefeated throughout the tournament.

Congratulations, gentlemen!

Rebecca Chipman & James Gerard Receive Awards

On Monday, November 23rd, Rebecca Chipman and James Gerard received their awards from His Honour Brigadier-General The Honourable J.J. Grant CMM, ONS, CD (Ret'd), Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia at Government House.

Rebecca Chipman, Gr. 7 and James Gerard, Gr. 7 entered their poems into the Queen's Commonwealth Essay Competition last year.  Their poems were amazing and each had the opportunity to read them during our Prize Day last year.

They both received a Silver award.

To put it in perspective, The Royal Commonwealth Society received more than 13,000 entries from over 600 schools in 49 Commonwealth countries and territories. Both the Senior and the Junior judging panels were impressed by the quality of the entries and in total over 3,000 participants won an award, Gold, Silver or Bronze.

Quite an accomplishment for both of them!

Tales of the Old North - Nov. 27 & 28

Three of our students, Rory Flynn, Sandler Gordon and Sophie Warwick-Baur are part of "Xara Youth Ensemble", one of the two choral ensembles that make up Xara Choral Theatre Society.  Alums Teagan Muir and Sarah Bjornson also belong to this talented group.

A reminder that this weekend on November 27th and 28th, Xara is presenting Tales of the Old North at Alderney Landing Theatre. Drawn from the classic collection of Norwegian folktales by the same name, Tales of the Old North tells the story of a brave little girl named Ariana. On a journey filled with magical characters based on Nova Scotian folklore, Ariana travels on the winter Wind, and battles an Evil Queen to save an unlikely friend, a great White Bear who may hold the key to saving Ariana's village from hunger and cold.

This production involves Xara's youth ensemble and our young women's choir as well as a few friends who round out the chorus of 45 singers. (The giant white bear puppet will also be a highlight!). Many of you have heard Xara perform and can attest that they have a beautiful sound - no surprise that a couple of years ago they won the award for the top women's choir in Canada!

This is a great show for a group of friends or a family, tickets are $20 with a $10 price for children (there is a matinee available). You can purchase tickets online here: https://alderneylanding.ticketpro.ca/#def_1120008962

They also have a community tickets program where you can purchase tickets on behalf of someone who might not be otherwise able to attend - two of our community partners are Adsum House and Veith House. Purchase community tickets and receive a tax receipt here: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/xara-choral-theatre-society/
