Sacred Heart debating coach, Brian Casey, reports on the Oxford Cup Debating Tournament in Calgary, Alberta this past weekend.
Brian writes, "I am pleased to report that the Nova Scotia 1 team of Rory Flynn and Catherine Burke will represent Canada at the Oxford Union high school debate tournament in March. A team from Whiteoaks in Missisauga will join them in Oxford. The team qualified in Calgary this weekend after 8 rounds of debate against the best from across Canada.
This is Rory’s fourth competition in Oxford (in addition to one at Cambridge); so far as we can determine no debater (from Canada or the UK) has qualified as often. Last year she and Mattea Roach (class of 2015), reached the final round and we are hoping she and Catherine will enjoy the same result.
Nova Scotia 1 broke 1st with sixteen points, taking a first in every round but one. This is never an easy achievement in national competition. 80 debaters from across Canada competed in an event otherwise dominated by Ontario teams.
Rory repeated as the 1st place debater at the tournament; Catherine was 8th for a personal best in national competition.
The girls are pictured with Mayor Naheed Nenshi, a former Canadian worlds debater. Congratulations to them both on this outstanding performance."
Rory and Catherine, Sacred Heart School is very proud of both of you!
