Will Ryan, Gr. 6 Attends National La Dictée P.G.L. in Montreal

Will Ryan's mother, Tracey, reports on the trip to Montreal with Will.

"What a memorable weekend this was for Will (May 10 & 11)!  He had so much fun!  The day before the dictation competition, Will and his fellow participants were treated to a restaurant lunch downtown Montreal, and an afternoon together at The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.  Will really enjoyed that!

La Dictée P.G.L. was held inside The Pierre-Péladeau Centre (University of Québec at Montreal).  During the opening ceremony, it was announced that approximately 3700 students in Grades 5 and 6 competed to participate in this final dictation.  How special Will felt to be among the 89 finalists selected!  The large majority of finalists were from Québec.  There were also finalists from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, N.B., Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut - as well as from Louisiana, California, Senegal and Morocco!

Finalists had pre-arranged seating on the stage.  Lucky for me, Will was seated at the very front of the stage, in the very front row.  How nice that I could so clearly see him from my audience seat!

As for how he did?  Will did not win (i.e. place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in this final dictation competition).  He was, however, presented with a special award for placing 1st in Regionals for Atlantic Canada.  You'll see him along side of all other Regional winners.

What a wonderful moment it was when Paul Gérin-Lajoie, the man who created this dictation competition over 35 years ago, came on stage to wish the kids good luck.  His health is not strong, so all very were touched to see him there."

Sacred Heart School is so very proud of Will for making it to this National competition!  Way to go, Will!
