Results of the Impromptu Debate Tournament: Rory Flynn 1st & Catherine Burke 2nd!

Sacred Heart and Fountain Academy enjoyed another  successful impromptu tournament this weekend.  Some milestones:

Rory Flynn  placed 1st individually, followed by Catherine Burke who was 2nd  ––
not bad in a pool of the 40 best debaters in Nova Scotia.  (Come to think of it, Sacred Heart debaters placed 1st and 2nd last year, too.)  As such Rory & Catherine qualified to represent Nova Scotia in Calgary this November at the Oxford Cup.  This is Rory’s 30th or 31st first place individual trophy – about 22 times more than any one else in Canadian history.  (She has placed 1st in Canada 9 times, won 1st place in the UK three times and placed 1st at a number of other international tournaments).  It is no shame for our top grade 11 student to have placed 2nd, behind her.

In addition, both Robert Sapp (13th individually) and David Sapp (16th individually) qualified to represent us at the Oxford Cup in Calgary in November.  The Oxford Cup selects Canadian teams to attend a tournament at Oxford University in March.  To date only 1 Canadian team has made it to the finals there (from Sacred Heart, last year).

In the junior high category, Derek Ryan placed 5th individually, Isaac Burke was 10th, and together they were the 4th place team.  We were the only school with teams in both the junior and senior break.

Madeleine Peet placed 9th individually.  Rebecca Chipman (12th) and Cassidy Bonnell (14th) placed 7th as a team and Madeleine and Eliza Rankin were 8th as a team.

Attending their first tournament, Cullen Roach (15th) and Eamon Roach (16th) finished 9th as a team – their individual standings about the same as Rory Flynn’s at her first provincial tournament (she finished 15th).  No pressure, guys.

Congratulations to our other debaters:  Emma Lee McLean, Ailie Sullivan, Juliana Murphy, Manal Quraishi,  Minahil Nadeem, Peter Duff, Simon Tector and Madison James.  In addition, about a dozen of our debaters helped by acting as moderators or timers for the weekend.
