Cache Cache Event for Grade 7s!

Both Grade 7 classes got a special Friday night event on January 9th which their parents purchased at the Christmas Fair as an auction item.  They got to play sports games with Mr. Griffiths, have pizza and cupcakes, and play the famous Sacred Heart game called Cache Cache, followed by a movie in the Little Theatre with popcorn!  They also each received a special homemade blanket made by Mrs. Denise MacDonell.

A huge thank you to Miss Pauline Scott for offering this event as a fundraiser on a Friday night!  Thank you to Mrs. MacKenzie for helping with the event as well and Miss Martell despite being in a wheelchair.

Author Lesley Choyce Visits Grade 3 & Grade 5

Lesley Choyce presented to the grade 3s and grade 5s recently as part of the WITS ( Writers In The School) Program.

An English Professor at Dalhousie and a well known author of multi-age books, Mr. Choyce's presentations engaged the students in discussions about writing, imagination and creativity. Grade 3s were introduced to his book Skunks for Breakfast. Two special poems had been written for the class, Halifax and Ants, and the class with left with a copy of the book for their class library.

Grade 5s benefited from poems and sections from his novels for young readers Wave Warrior, Reckless, Dirt Bike and a Book of Poems. A music video was shown that had been made to accompany his poem. He talked about the writing process from ideas, to capturing the right words, using your imagination, how he feels when his work is completed and when his finished work is sent to a publisher. The children were kept spellbound, intrigued and engaged.

NS High School Math League

The Nova Scotia High School Math League competition was held on January 10 at St. Mary's University.  There were over 25 teams of four participating from high schools across HRM.  Sacred Heart High School had three teams representing our school.  Accompanied by math teachers Kathleen Bekkers and Jason Ell, our participants were Clair Reardon, Laura Bullock, Farah Abdelbari, Rebecca Butler, Razan Al-Sharkawi, Luoyao (Carol) He, Shao Junziqi, Holly Stuart, Fiona Baker, Emma Butler, Catherine Burke and Lala Lee.  They did an excellent job with some very challenging problems, especially during the team relay.  Well done, ladies!

Grade 2 Gets Its Very Own Killer Whale!

Mme Sealy recently told us their exciting news. Alumna, Carla Crossmam, class of 2006, has gifted the grade 2 classes with their very own killer whale for Christmas. Fantome, born in 2009, has been adopted in our names and each student has received a photo and adoption certificate. He lives in the Pacific Ocean and is being monitored through the Vancouver Aquarium, where Carla works and runs the adopt-a-whale program. We are very excited about our new class pet. We will be skyping with Carla in the new year to ask her questions about Fantome and his family.
