Lesley Choyce presented to the grade 3s and grade 5s recently as part of the WITS ( Writers In The School) Program.
An English Professor at Dalhousie and a well known author of multi-age books, Mr. Choyce's presentations engaged the students in discussions about writing, imagination and creativity. Grade 3s were introduced to his book Skunks for Breakfast. Two special poems had been written for the class, Halifax and Ants, and the class with left with a copy of the book for their class library.
Grade 5s benefited from poems and sections from his novels for young readers Wave Warrior, Reckless, Dirt Bike and a Book of Poems. A music video was shown that had been made to accompany his poem. He talked about the writing process from ideas, to capturing the right words, using your imagination, how he feels when his work is completed and when his finished work is sent to a publisher. The children were kept spellbound, intrigued and engaged.
