Throughout the school year the Elementary School students had the amazing opportunity to work with real Nova Scotian authors. This was possible through the WITS (Writers in the Schools) program. The Nova Scotia Writers Federation administers the program. Recently, we welcomed our sixth author. Jackie Halsey, author of The Terrible Horrible Smelly Pirate, Bluenose Adventure and Explosion Newsie. She spent a day with grade primary students who prepared for her visit by decorating the library with pirate pictures. Our grade four students were mesmerized by her books on the Bluenose and the Halifax Explosion. Her books focused on children their age who had adventures on the Bluenose and during the Halifax Explosion. The love of reading and writing was celebrated.
Previous authors who spent time with elementary grades were Daphne Greer, Jacob’s Landing, Alison Delory, Lunar Lifter, Janet Barkhouse, The Pit Pony Picture Bookand Sable Island and Joanne Light, Susie the Orangutan. Deirdre Dwyer provided a writers’ workshop for our grade five and grade six students.
