Pancake Supper was a Huge Success Tonight!

The Parents' Guild hosted a pancake supper tonight at the school.  It was scheduled for Shrove Tuesday but that was a snow storm and had to be cancelled.  Rather than cancel it totally, they set a new date of today.

Thank you to the Guild Executive for all the work in preparing for it and to all their helpers!

Journée de la Francophonie

The Elementary School recently had a special French visitor.

Malini MacDonald from the Taste of Mauritius Catering & Takeaway wrote:

"I wanted to firstly thank you for the opportunity to showcase a piece of Mauritius with your beautiful school and wonderful students today.

Congratulations to Anisha Rajaselvam!

Grade 7 student, Anisha Rajaselvam, raised $2,100 on her own selling cards to raise money for children's cancer research at the IWK.   All the cards had her own paintings on the front.

The IWK Foundation said "The fundraser was a huge success and raised an astounding $2,100 for children's cancer research.  Fundraisers like this are made extra special when the community gets involved to lend a helping hand!"

Congratulations, Anisha!

Anisha also got fourth place in the 2015 National Poetry contest!

Authors Visit Sacred Heart Elementary School

Throughout the school year the Elementary School students had the amazing opportunity to work with real Nova Scotian authors. This was possible through the WITS (Writers in the Schools) program. The Nova Scotia Writers Federation administers the program. Recently, we welcomed our sixth author. Jackie Halsey, author of The Terrible Horrible Smelly PirateBluenose Adventure  and Explosion NewsieShe spent a day with grade primary students who prepared for her visit by decorating the library with pirate pictures. Our grade four students were mesmerized by her books on the Bluenose and the Halifax Explosion.  Her books focused on children their age who had adventures on the Bluenose and during the Halifax Explosion. The love of reading and writing was celebrated.
Previous authors who spent time with elementary grades were Daphne Greer, Jacob’s Landing,   Alison Delory, Lunar Lifter, Janet Barkhouse, The Pit Pony Picture Bookand Sable Island and Joanne LightSusie the Orangutan.  Deirdre Dwyer provided a writers’ workshop for our grade five and grade six students.
