Fountain Rules the Track at Regionals

We had another tremendously successful Track Meet!

At metros last week, over 1250 athletes competed for the top eight spots in each individual event and top four spot in each of the relays. Those who earned these spots moved onto this week's NSSAF Capital Region Meet against the top finishers of the County District. The athletes that advanced did the school proud!

In his first ever track season, Kurt Donovan advanced to Regionals in the shot put and discus. He made incredible improvements in the week leading up to regionals (thanks to the talented Bev Deal) and finished a commendable third place in the shot put, shattering the school record and earning a trip to provinicials with a throw of 10.49 m. In the discus, he threw his first two out of bounds before throwing a HUGE throw of approx. 35m....then stepped out the front of the circle (which is a scratch in discus). While he won't advance this year, he certainly scared the competition and will be coming out on a mission next year!

Ian Inglis had the highest placing of any Fountain athlete, finishing an incredible second place in the discus with 34.33 m. With that throw, he smashed his previous school record of 26.36 m! Ian also tied for fourth in the shot put with a throw of 11.72m but since his second place throw wasn't as far as the other athlete's, he ranked fifth and is a spare for provincials. His fourth place throw, again, replaced his previous school record.

It could be easily defended that David MacDonald worked harder than anyone else at the whole meet on Day 1. In four hours, and direct sun/heat he ran two 100 m races, two 400 m races and jumped five times. He was ranked second going into the 400 m finals but after completing five jumps and a 100 m final in the forty-five minutes leading up to the 400 m final (he was running from event to event), he, rightfully, ran out of gas. He did however finish in the top eight in all three events (100 m, 400 m and long jump). On Day 2, things took a major turn. David qualified for the 200 m finals with a personal best time of 24.05 seconds and in the finals he surpassed his personal goal, finishing in 4th place with a new best time of 23.80 seconds and a trip to provincials!

The Intermediate boys 4x400 m relay team (Kyle Smith, Benno Orr, Peter Crouse and Mitchell Reardon) took 19 seconds off their qualifying time to finish 5th overall earning both a school record of 4:08.53 and a spot as the spare team for provincials!

Mark Biddulph, once again, beat his own school record in the 800 m finishing strong in 6th place and rounded out the top 10 in the grueling 3000 m. Finn Eichhorn finished an impressive 8th place in the 800 m and finished 11th in the 1500 m (taking 8 seconds off his personal best time). Kyle Smith took 6 seconds off his personal best time and finished 10th in the very competitive intermediate boys 800 m. He also jumped just shy of 5 m (and set a personal best) to finish 10th in the long jump. David Sapp took 13 seconds off his previous 3000 m time to take 13th place.

The junior boys 4x400 m team of Will Nickerson, Will Ryan, Lennard Kwapisz and Finn Eichhorn took a whopping 24 seconds off their time from Districts and finished 8th place. Three of the four will get a chance to compete as juniors again next year!

The Senior Boys 4x100 m team of Arshan Keyghobadi, Max Leeb, Mark Biddulph and David MacDonald set the school record to finish 6th overall and the 4x400 team of Leeb, Biddulph, MacDonald and Robert Sapp demolished the previous school record by 16 seconds to set the new standard to 4:06.61.
