Delightful Story of one of our Exchange Students

When Valentina Wegener arrived in Canada on exchange from Austria, she went to the rink with her host family to watch their children, Teagan and Juliana, in their skating lessons. She immediately wanted to join them but there was a substantial “skills gap”.

At some considerable ministrations, her host mother, Libby Kinghorne, was able to get the Halifax Skating Club to agree to put Valentina in special skating lessons twice a week for the time she was here (admittedly with much younger children, but that is not important).

This is the result!  Libby didn’t know the Club was going to prepare badges and a certificate - but to Valentina’s delight, they did!  Her well deserved pride in her accomplishments were abundantly clear.

Thank you Halifax Skating Club!  And, well done, Valentina!  Congratulations!

Recruitment Update from Alison Boyer

Just wanted to share some details about my recent recruiting trip for Sacred Heart to  Vancouver, China and Vietnam. The trip consisted of school visits, agency visits and parent/student fairs. I met many interesting students with quite high level English. Vietnamese students are very excited to learn about Canada and SHSH as an option for high school study. Chinese students continue to spread the word. The main theme throughout was that coming to Canada (SHSH) to study for high school years is a major goal and a wonderful opportunity they would love to have.

Gentlemen of Gr. 8 Book Buddies with Gr. 2 French Class

On Tuesday, April 12th, the gentlemen of Grade 8 visited with Mme Maynard's Grade 2 French class to share stories. The Grade 8s have been perfecting their past tense and used this as a basis for a children's book complete with beautiful artwork on each page. They read these books to the Gr 2s who then read stories they had written in return! Everyone had a great time hearing each other's imaginative stories.

History Remembered

On Thursday, April 7th, Neptune's Misery Loves Theatre Company came to perform "HomeFront" to grades 7 to12 in the Study Hall.  The play used firsthand accounts of life in the trenches and at home to introduce us to a Nova Scotia family in transition during World War 1.  When a group of modern day siblings and cousins find an old trunk in their grandparent's attic, they're transported back 100 years through journals, letters and other artifacts from the Great War.  This show touched on the social, political and psychological aspects of conflict, and it was greatly appreciated by teachers and students alike.  Thank you to Mrs. McKay for bringing this troupe in to Sacred Heart.  It was excellent.

On Monday, April 11, Mrs. McKay's Grade 10 Canadian History classes attended workshops with the Lest We Forget Project, conducted by staff from the Halifax Public Library. Students were invited to explore copies of original military records of Nova Scotian soldiers and nursing sisters. Each student was assigned a package of documents that helped them to trace an individual's WW 1 experiences, including attestation papers, casualty forms, medical histories and pay records. The students learned a great deal about working with primary sources, and Nova Scotia's proud WW1 history!
