SophieConnect Visitors

Lori Wilson and Karl Haeseler visited our campus on Wednesday, October 28th.  Lori holds the position of co-Director of SophieConnect, as well Upper School Director of Campus Ministry and coordinator of Community Service and Summer Enrichment.  Karl is also a co-Director of SophieConnect as well as an Upper School Computer Teacher and the Director of Educational Technology. They are members of staff at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich, Connecticut.

There are 13 schools across the North American Sacred Heart Network that are participating in SophieConnect. This a great option to introduce our students to online learning strategies and to diversify our course offerings at the senior level.  Click here to read about the program.

Grade 7 Science & Physics 12 Lab Work

In Science 7, we looked at the way different substances dehydrate cucumber slices.
Scroll down to see what Physics 12 is working on!
Thank you to Mrs. Janne Tamblyn Lee for the pictures.

We were testing the strength of spaghetti noodle bridges in physics 12. As you can see, we take our dried pasta data seriously.

The Excelsior Club at Fountain

The Excelsior Club at Fountain was excited (and very lucky!) to have two guest speakers visit today. Nathan DeLuca (brother of alum Sabrina Secord) and Kiga Tymianski joined us today to talk about their work in cosplay (creating amazing costumes!). The boys had plenty of questions and are looking forward to seeing Nathan again at Hal-Con on Friday!

Sacred Heart Places 1st Again at McGill High School Tournament!

Brian Casey, our Sacred Heart School debating coach, announced that he is "pleased to report that Sacred Heart students once again triumphed at the McGill High School tournament, held this weekend in Montreal.  The tournament, with 200 debaters from across Canada, is often the largest high school tournament of the year.  It is also the longest running;  this year was the 57th.

On Saturday, Rory Flynn became the first student in the tournament's history to place first for a third time.  She and her partner successfully defended the team trophy as well, which Rory and her different partners have won three years in a row.  Our teams also won the team trophy in 2008;  in total, our debaters have placed first individually at this event 7 times in 12 tries.  Rory's team had a perfect score, taking first place in each of the 9 rounds.

Our success in the junior category was similarly impressive.  Derek Ryan and Madeleine Peet made it to the junior final, placing 8th and 12th in the junior category.  Sacred Heart teams have made it to the junior final each of the years there has been a junior final--and we have won it as often as every other school put together.

Ours was the only school to have teams in the junior and senior final.  In addition, our debaters had a lovely weekend in Montreal.  Kudos to Catherine Burke and Emma McLean who missed breaking to quarter finals by one point;  Robert Sapp and David Sapp, Ailie Sullivan and Minahil Nadeem all distinguished themselves well.

Two of the Ontario school teams were coached by Sacred Heart alumnae;  the tournament was tabbed by Alyson Duff (who has many Sacred Heart connections)."

Another great showing.

Grant, CMM, ONS, CD (Ret’d) Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia.  The certificate is awarded after a minimum of six months of work dedicated to service, physical activity and leadership skill building including a three day outdoor adventure. To achieve at this level, students must make a significant commitment to engage in a greater journey of personal discovery that attests to character. Congratulations, Anya, Genevieve and Grace on this accomplishment!"

"Let's Get Crafty"

'Let's get Crafty' is a new Elementary School after school craft club for grades 3-6.  It's proving to be very popular with 22 members. More students can join in the New Year.

Students make things to take home for themselves and their families, but they will also sell their creations at school events, such as the Christmas Fair - look out for the 'Lets get Crafty' area. Funds raised will be contributed directly to the school to help with things such as field trips & sports teams.  We encourage recycling & repurposing to make some projects, so students bring in some items from home to give them a new lease of life.

Parents & staff have been kindly donating materials. If you have any craft materials at home you would like to donate, the students will happily accept them, e.g. buttons, yarn, fabric, wine corks. Drop off with Mrs O'Halloran in the Elementary School

During the year, projects will include - sewing, rug making, card making, button crafts, jewelry making, fashion accessories, pom pom making, animal toys

Students are learning new skills, discovering their own hidden talents and making some fantastic projects.

We are grateful to the following people who have helped create this craft club:  Eleanor Jamieson, Susan Archibald & Mrs. O'Halloran organize & supervise the club.  We have guest crafters in doing workshops, e.g. Robin T & Gabrielle James (gr6) teaching jewelry making.  Other parents help when they can. We have several HS girls volunteering with us - Rachel Latimer, Olivia & Lauren Ryan.

Author of "Divine Intervention: Book One of The Dining and Social Club for Time Travellers' Visits

Ms. Jenny Wright, says that "Every seat in the library was filled by students at lunch and yet not a noise could be heard as Elyse Kishimoto, author of  'Divine Intervention: Book One of The Dining and Social Club for Time Travellers', introduced her new novel to our students. Ms. Kishimoto sold all of her material belongings to travel north and east in order to find inspiration for writing. She persevered through significant doubts and ongoing criticism of her work. In the end, it was her strength and a simple phrase of encouragement that helped her to persevere: 'I believe in your story; I believe in your talent.' Thank you to Mrs. Tarulli for organising this opportunity for our students to hear of the success of a determined young woman with vision."
